1.  William TELFORD

First Generation

1.  William TELFORD
According to St Cuthbert's, William TELFORD and Mary BOOTHMAN were married on the 25 January 1797. He was attached to the Royal Artillery and could read and write. Both parties were from the parish. No parents' names in register.
Witnesses: James BOOTHMAN and George BATY.
A William TELFORD, born Brampton, Solport Parish about Nov 1775 according to PRO. He joined the 9th Battalion Royal Artillery at age 18 in Dec 1793. He served until June 1816. In 1812, his battalion left Plymouth for Spain and France and eventually to Canada. He was a "Sergeant". Nothing more is known of William and Mary.

Second Generation

2.  James TELFORD
James was born about August 1800, Carlisle, St Cuthbert's Parish.
He enlisted as a Drummer at age 10 in 1810. He probably served with Burgoyne's occupation forces in the Netherlands and France. In 1823 his 5th Company of Royal Sappers went to Quebec, Canada to rebuild the Citadel.
In 1825, he married Mary Ann NUGENT, age 21 b Ireland, on 24 September at the Garrison Anglican Church, Quebec City.
They had three children known born in Canada:
William, born 19 June 1826, baptized 16 July 1826- my GGF below
Charles, born 19 April 1828, baptized 1 May 1828- little info
James , born 10 October 1830, baptized 24 October 1830- probably died young.
In Dec 1830, James was asked to re-attest---he refused and was given a certificate of discharge. Nothing is known of the family for almost 20 years when they surfaced in the 1850 US Census Kings County NY.
James died shortly thereafter of Tuberculosis on 28 November 1853 and was buried at St Luke's churchyard, vault 15. This was attributed to his painting trade.
